■WHAT IS LAKE SHIKOTSU?

The second deepest lake in Japan, it has a depth of 360m at its deepest point. Even in the depths of Hokkaido's cold winters, it tends not to freeze, making it Japan's northernmost unfreezing lake. It's a caldera lake, which means that it formed after rainwater filled up a crater caused by a volcanic eruption. It’s often considered to be Japan's first or second clearest lake.

The lake is located in a popular sightseeing area accessible 1-hour by car from New Chitose Airport or Sapporo. Many visitors come on the weekends and holidays to enjoy kayaking and diving.
